The Mastersons

The Mastersons

Elizabeth's father is John Masterson. Elizabeth named her first born after her father.

John Masterson was born around 1847 in Monaghan Ireland to Barclay Masterson and Mary Coyle and moved to Glasgow with his older brothers to find work on the busy docks. He was about 14. In Glasgow, he met Mary McAtee. Mary's parents were Owen McAtee and Mary Reilly.

When John and Mary married at St. Mary's Church in 1873 (where their daughter will marry 25 years later), she was a widow, having been married briefly to a Mr. Maxwell. In their marriage record below, Mary worked as a cotton factory worker. Alexander's Cotton Mill was just a few blocks away and a likely employer.

At the time of their marriage, John and Mary lived next door to each other at 25 & 27 Gallowgate.
